Fillings – Decay
Decay is caused after bacteria (plaque) sits on the teeth for too long causing a cavity.
The dentist removes all the decay and then fills the whole with composite resin.
The longer cavities are left the bigger they become. Regular check up and cleans are invaluable when trying to prevent decay.
Fillings – Chipped Tooth
Chipped teeth are fixed using composite resin. Chips on front teeth are common after falls, especially in children.
Crowns
Crowns are used when the tooth is weak and requires extra protection to support chewing and normal use. A crown may be necessary after large decay has made the tooth weak or after root canal therapy.
Bridges
A bridge is used to replace a missing tooth. It involves having an artificial tooth attached to the adjacent teeth with crowns.
Bridges are only an option if the two other supporting teeth are healthy enough to support the artificial tooth.
Implants
Implants are a more permanent way of replacing a lost tooth. An implant involves placing a screw into the bone to hold an artificial tooth on top.
Root Canal Treatment (RCT)
Root canal treatment is performed to save a tooth that has been badly damaged due to injury, decay or disease.
It involves using instruments to remove the pulp of the tooth which contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue.
RCT treatment is normally completed over three visits. More complicated cases are referred to a endodontist.
